Public Bikes recalls bicycles

Public Bikes Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product.

Name of Product: 2010 through 2012 Model Year Bicycles

Units: About 4,100

Importer: Public Bikes Inc. of San Francisco

Manufacturer: Wellgo Pedals Corp. Taiwan (pedals)

Hazard: The pedals can crack and break, posing a fall hazard to the rider.

Incidents/Injuries: Public Bikes has received 24 reports of pedals cracking. No injuries have been reported. Description: This recall involves 18 models of women's and men's Public Bikes. The bicycles are various colors and sizes. "Public" or "Publicbikes.com" is printed on either the bicycle chain guard or the rear fender. The bicycles have a metal "badge" at the top of the down tube with a number stamped on it. Recalled badge numbers are 1-5843, 5845, 12560, 20743 and 20757.

The "Apple" model, which has no badge, is also included. The word "Wellgo" is embossed on both the top and bottom of the pedals. All bicycles with Wellgo pedals are included in this recall.

Sold at: Public Bikes & Gear in San Francisco and other Public Bikes dealers in 16 states nationwide and publicbikes.com from April 2010 through January 2012 for between $500 and $1,250.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop riding the recalled bicycles and contact Public Bikes or an authorized Public Bikes dealer for free replacement pedals. The recalled pedals have a black spindle, the replacement pedal spindles are chrome.

Mavic USA recalls bicycles

On February 4, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bicycles with R-SYS Front Wheel Rims

Units: About 12,000

Importer: Mavic USA, of Haverhill, Mass.

Manufacturer: Salomon SAS, of France

Hazard: The spokes on the bicycle’s front wheel rim can break during use, posing a fall and crash hazard to riders.

Incidents/Injuries: Mavic USA has received one report of an injury involving broken teeth.

Description: This recall includes R-SYS and R-SYS Premium front wheel rims. They were sold as original equipment on various bicycle brands and were also sold separately. R-SYS wheel rims are designed for road bikes. “R-SYS” is printed on the front rim of the wheels. The rims are 22mm in diameter, with 16 tubular, unidirectional carbon spokes.

Sold at: Specialty bicycle retailers from May 2007 through December 2008 for between $700 and $750 for the front wheel of the two-wheel set when sold separately from the bicycle.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using bicycles with the recalled front wheel rims and contact their bicycle retailer for a free replacement front rim.

REI Recalls Children’s Trailer Bicycles

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm named below in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Novara Afterburner Trailer Bicycles

Units: About 5,200

Distributor: Recreational Equipment Inc.(REI), of Kent, Wash.

Hazard: The children’s trailer bicycle can detach from the adult bicycle, posing a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: REI has received one report of a children’s trailer bicycle detaching from the adult bicycle. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the Novara Afterburner trailer bicycle, a single-wheel children’s bicycle that attaches to, and cannot be operated independently of, an adult bicycle.

Sold at: REI stores nationwide from February 2007 through June 2007 for about $160.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the bicycle trailer, visit the nearest REI store or contact REI for a free replacement part, a full refund or credit.

Raleigh America Recalls Bicycles; Forks Can Break Causing Loss of Control

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firms named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Products: 2007 Raleigh Cadent Bicycles with Carbonage Carbon Forks

Units: About 1200

Importer: Raleigh America Inc., of Kent, Wash.

Manufacturer: Carbonage Technology, of Baoan, China

Hazard: The forks can break during normal use, causing the rider to lose control, fall and suffer serious injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: Raleigh America has received three reports of forks breaking resulting in injuries including a dislocated shoulder, a concussion and a broken jaw.

Description: The recall involves the 2007 Raleigh Cadent 1.0, Cadent 2.0 and Cadent Carbon bicycle models with carbon forks. “Raleigh” is printed on the down tube of the bicycle, and the model name is printed on the top tube.

Sold at: Raleigh America dealers nationwide from January 2007 through June 2007 for between $660 and $1930.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles immediately and return them to place of purchase. Raleigh bicycle dealers will replace the forks at no charge.

Name of Product: Combination Tire Inflator and Hand Pumps

Units: About 55,000

Importer: Innovations In Cycling Inc., doing business as Genuine Innovations, of Tucson, Ariz.

Hazard: The combination tire inflator and hand pump can shatter under pressure when inflating tires if there is a blockage in the tire valve, posing the risk of bruises, lacerations, and ringing in the ears to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 12 reports of combination tire inflator and hand pumps exploding. Six injuries were reported, including lacerations, temporary ringing in ear and bruising.

Description: This recall involves the Genuine Innovations Second Wind MTB model with part numbers 2525, 2525-O or 3519 and the Wrench Force Two Shot model with part numbers 84995 or 80383 combination tire inflator and hand pumps. These devices consist of a hand pump and CO2 cartridge inflator. The part number can only be found on the packaging.

Sold at: Specialty retail stores nationwide and bicycle or motorcycle/ATV catalogues and online stores. The Genuine Innovations Second Wind MTB and the Wrench Force Two Shot were sold from January 2004 through May 2007 for about $30. The Second Wind MTB was sold as part of the Genuine Innovations ATV Deluxe Tire Repair & Inflation Kit from July 2005 to January 2007 for about $50.
