On April 3, 2008 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Children’s Sunglasses

Units: About 144,000

Importer/Distributor: StyleMark Inc., of Ormond Beach, Fla.

Hazard: Surface paint in the orange lettering on the temples of the sunglasses contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recalled children’s sunglasses have Main Street Drag characters on the bottom of one lens. The sunglass frames have dark metallic blue or dark metallic red fronts and gray checkered sides. “Main Street Drag” is printed in orange at the temples. Style number DI25K7116 is printed on the left temple. No other styles are included in this recall.

Sold at: Payless, Walgreen’s, Academy Sports, and CVS stores nationwide from October 2007 through March 2008 for between $6 and $9.

Consumer Product Safety Reform Act passes Senate

Strong support for this legislation:

The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved Sen. Mark Pryor's legislation that would make major changes to consumer product safety law. The Senate approved the bill, called the "Consumer Product Safety Reform Act," by a 79-13 vote after four days of debate.

"It provides new safety safeguards that emphasize resources, accountability, disclosure and testing _ from the factory floor to the store shelves," said Pryor, D-Ark.

The bill calls for a public database of consumer complaints, bolsters the Consumer Products Safety Commission to help it certify the safety of overseas products, bans lead in children's goods and sets new standards for safe toys. The Bush administration and other critics said the database unfairly could taint manufacturers. But President Bush has not threatened a veto.

The House's version has many differences, including a lower cap for jury awards.

RC2 Recalls Potty Training Seats Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Each seat has either a yellow chair with a green removable seat and a purple lift out-pot or a blue chair with a white removable seat and green lift out-pot. The words "100 Acre Wood" are molded on the chair back. The plaque inserted into the back of the seat contains molded Winnie the Pooh and Tigger characters.

Fears of unsafe products prompt parents to make their own toys

The return of the cardboard box!

The recalls since June of more than 4 million toys with lead paint — from certain Winnie the Pooh play sets to some Barbie accessories — have educated many local parents, causing them to rethink their approach to toys.

Susan and Dace Campbell, of Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, for example, now make many toys themselves for 1-year-old son Arlan. They keep it simple, making blocks from old boxes covered with contact paper, or creating rolling toys made from oatmeal containers. Their son often adds his own touch with stickers.

In addition to knowing where their toys came from, Susan Campbell says it also forces them to be creative.

On October 25 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Former heads of Consumer Product Safety Commission urge its strengthening

Ann Brown and Pamela Gilbert, the former chairman and executive director of the beleaguered Consumer Product Safety Commission, wrote an Op-Ed piece in Sunday's Washington Post that says what parents already know:

Parents across America are wondering if they can trust the toys on store shelves not to injure their children, or worse. They are asking who's in charge and what are they doing to keep dangerous toys from being sold....

What's the problem?

The commission has no chairman and has lacked a quorum for months. Without a quorum, it cannot bring a lawsuit, assess a penalty or enact new regulations to address hazards in the marketplace. Congress recently passed legislation to give it a quorum for six months, but after that, if no chairman has been approved, the commission will again be effectively unable to act.

Magnetic alphabet and number trains recalled because of lead paint

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Magnetic Toy Train Sets

Units: About 27,000

Importer: Hampton Direct, of Williston, Vt.

Hazard: The paint on the trains contains excessive amounts of lead, posing a risk of lead exposure to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: None.

Description: This recall involves Magnetic Alphabet and Number train sets. The train sets include a wooden engine, caboose, letters and numbers. The miniature train sets are sold in a rainbow of colors and have either a letter or number attached to the top of a base with four wooden wheels. The alphabet train set contains 28 pieces, and the number train set contains 12 pieces. Each car in the train set is 2 ½ x 2 ½ x 2 inches in size.

Sold by: Johnson Smith Company, The Paragon Gifts Inc., and Starcrest Products of California catalogues nationwide from December 2005 through July 2007 for about $30.
